Pictured on the right is the StaySafe device in the state of detecting a roofie in a drink. The case lights up red and the user receives a phone notification via the connected app, also pictured on the right. The notification reads: "Alert. Ketamine has been detected in your drink. Please dispose of your drink immediately."
More than 1 in 13 students reported being drugged from a research study from 2020 involving 6,000 students from US universities
As students at a large university, we often hear stories and unfortunately know of peers experiencing being drugged on campus. In an effort to increase our peers' safety, we want to develop a device that gives individuals the freedom to go out with their friends without feeling scared.
Recruited peers 21 and older that own a smartwatch, asked them to go to a bar of their choice and wear their smartwatch and also bring a straw
Asked Michigan students their behaviors when going out, such as what they bring to the bar with them, what they notice others wearing to the bar, and their attitudes towards drugs
Had users go through 6 scenarios to test how they interact with the low-fi prototype
Our participants expressed sanitary concerns throughout the diary study and user enactments. They worried about transporting the device and keeping it clean while they were out at bars. To solve this issue, we decided to have the device sit in a case to make for easy transportation and help solve initial sanitary concerns.
Another issue participants ran into was using the straw for different types of drinks. A few of our participants opted for beer rather than a cocktail. This showed us that our device needed to be compatible with different types of drinks and glassware. Although our product doesn't involve a straw, the device needs to be versatile for a variety of drink types.
Participants also felt uncomfortable and awkward carrying around a larger straw in public. One participant mentioned that the device could be more convenient "if it was smaller, I made my boyfriend carry it because it didn’t fit in my purse" (P3). We addressed this issue by brainstorming accessories that are discreet, familiar, and portable. We ultimately decided on a case that could act as a keychain, but also hook to belt loops and purses for example.
